For the first time in decades Christ Lutheran in Hilo Hawaii gathered for the sunrise on Easter morning in what they called a "Son Rose" service to emphasize that Christ has already risen, and we worship Him, not the sun. Gathering at the estate of a member couple of their congregation about 25 minutes up the coast from the church, over 60 people attended, many of whom don’t attend CLC. Some were friends and neighbors, and one couple came from the other side of the island, a drive of over an hour and a half for the service which started at 5:30AM. There also were guests from Oahu and one from as far away as New Jersey.

Pastor Mark Zier shared readings of scripture at four stations starting in darkness and ending at Opihi Point looking out over the ocean. Also included were three songs and of course the final announcement that “Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!” before fellowship ensued with coffee, juices, and a light breakfast.
The congregation gather in the sanctuary for their usual 8:00 and 10:30 services with an Easter brunch between and an egg hunt for the kids. If you ever get to the big island, be sure to stop by Christ Lutheran and join them in Experiencing Christ’s Love.
