Advanced Sacramental Preaching
Monday, Jul 01, 2024–Wednesday, Jul 03, 2024
This course traces how Lutherans have used the term "sacramental" in connection with preaching, specifically examining both dialectic and analogical approaches. Emphasis will be placed on how to train the habitus of sermon preparation so that preaching sacramentally flows from the text of the Scriptures, the liturgical context of preaching in the Divine Service, and the lives of the people in the pews. It will include an overview of the history of preaching in the LCMS, a critique of both deductive and inductive styles of homiletics, an examination of how classical rhetoric may benefit the contemporary preacher, and an in-depth analysis of the process of sermon preparation as a way of improving the oral sermon.
