Americans give away enormous sums of money every year. The annual survey of religious behavior conducted by The Barna Group shows that Americans continued that pattern of generosity in 2004, but that even though their giving to non-profit organizations and churches is significant, it is not increasing.
In 2004, nearly four out of every five adults - 83% - donated money to one or more non-profit organizations. That is similar to the percentage that has donated funds throughout the past decade. Barna's national study found that the people least likely to donate any money at all were those under the age of 25, people who never attended college, residents of the Northeast, atheists and agnostics, Asians and Hispanics. A quarter or more of the people from each of those segments failed to give away any money in 2004. The average amount of money donated per person was $1232 That suggests that the typical individual gave away about 3% of their income.

| Mainline Protestant Churches No Longer Dominate List of top 25 U.S. Religious Bodies |
 |
Pentecostal and historic African American churches are increasingly visible on the U.S. religious landscape and mainline Protestants no longer dominate a list of the 25 largest American churches, reports the National Council of Churches' 2005 "Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches."
Three of the largest 25 churches in the U.S. are Pentecostal and six are African American, the yearbook reports.
The list includes the rapidly growing Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Church in America, Jehovah's Witnesses, and - largest of all - the Roman Catholic Church.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
"Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost."
These are the words of the common doxology. We know them well; we sing them often. Especially when we want to express deep thanks to our Lord for the exceptional gifts He gives us.
I found myself singing the Doxology many times this past week as I traveled to Fort Wayne, IN and St. Louis, MO to participate in the placement of scores of young men and women into their respective ministries in our synod- pastors, teachers, DCEs, deaconesses, vicars, and deaconess interns. Our CNH district is particularly blessed and privileged to receive several of these fine young people.
As these placement meetings occurred at the seminaries I was able to meet the pastors, vicars, and deaconess interns that are coming to our district. (I look forward to meeting our teacher and DCE candidates when they arrive here.)
What impressed me most about every single one of these men and women was their both their eagerness to serve their Lord and His church and their strong missional hearts. Their eyes lit up with excitement as I met with them and told them about the CNH mission field to which they were being sent. A number of them shared with me that reaching the lost was what moved them to pursue pastoral or deaconate studies at the seminary. One man said, "The thought of mission work is what enabled me to get through Greek class."
You can see why the words of the Doxology were on my heart and lips these last several days. God has blessed us richly with several young, dedicated and well prepared men and women raring to go in Jesus Name to peoples who know Him and people who as yet do not.
Praise God for them and for the faithful dads and moms, professors, pastors, deaconesses, teachers, and congregations who invested their lives in preparing these folks for ministry. Our seminaries and universities are tremendous gifts to us. We do well to continue supporting these institutions. We do well, as well, in singing the Doxology for the gifts of these young men and women to us and our ongoing service in the vineyard. Praise God!
In His name,
Robert Newton, CNH District President |
